Flood warning and hydrometric data

Our flood warning and hydrometric data is available under license to organisations and individuals so that they can develop products, applications and services, such as tailored flood warnings.

Organisations and individuals want and need different things from the Environment Agency and the services we provide, such as our flood warning and river level information. We want to make it as easy and flexible as possible for organisations to access our data and information to develop tailored products, applications and services.

How can organisations access your data/information?

Anybody can request to be licensed to use our data although there are charges and conditions for use of the data. The permissions granted in the licence will reflect the way they wish to use it.  Main users fall into following two categories:

  • Value Added Resellers (VARs) - who will take the data and package it into application and sell this service onto to their customers.  VARs currently licensed to use our data are:
  • Direct Customers - are organisations or individuals who will use the data supplied by this service to create their own in-house applications.

In addition, we are also developing a targeted flood warning service for Category 1 and 2 responders (Civil Contingencies Act 2004).

What data/information is available?

We currently provide two sets of data under licence:

  1. Flood warning - our live flood warning data and associated GIS data or polygons are available for our flood alert and flood warning areas.
  2. Hydrometric (river and sea level) - we can provide the river and sea level data for the sites shown on our website. The data contains readings every 15 minutes along with basic station data, the date, time and value of each reading.

Do users have to pay for your data/information?

If you want access to our data you will need to pay for a license along with a fee for accessing the data and subsequent charges for supporting your service. If you intend to re-sell the information commercially, you will also need to pay us royalties for products and services that are created. We will keep all charges to a minimum and will only seek to cover the cost of providing the service.

We already make our flood warning and river and sea level information available free of charge for people that don't want or need to pay for this information by:

Our data (flood warnings and river & sea levels) is available under licence and at a cost for individuals or organisations that have additional needs and want a tailored service.
