Do I need to apply for a permit?
Companies that treat textiles will need a bespoke environmental permit to operate any activity listed in Section 6.4 Part A(1) (b) or (c) of Schedule 1 of the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
This section includes:
- Pre-treating operations (such as washing, bleaching, mercerisation) or dyeing fibres or textiles in a plant with treatment capacity of more than 10 tonnes per day;
- Treating textiles if the activity may result in the release of a substance to water as specified in paragraph 7 of Part 1 of the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

The majority of textile activities will require a bespoke environmental permit:

The Environment Agency must decide whether to grant or refuse the applications on this page. If it grants an application, it must also decide what conditions should be included in the permit.
